Flight of the Conchords: the coolest dorks on television

There isn’t anything more Rocketship Underpantsy than two Kiwis who rap about their emotions and perform a capella songs about their friendships.

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who make up the band, Flight of the Conchords, also have a musical comedy show of the same name on HBO. And though Flight of the Conchords had some great moments in their first season last year, they hit full stride this (second) season. The writing is fantastic and the music videos are impressive. Insta-hits this season include, “Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor” and “Hurt Feelings” as well as some songs that could woo even the most irritatingly serious music lovers, like “Carol Brown“, “Bret’s Day,” and the operatic “Rejected.”

The premise of the show revolves around Bret and Jemaine, two guys from New Zealand, who live in New York with a dream of rock stardom, except their gigs consist of mostly libraries and elevators. Their inept manager, Murray, is the Deputy Cultural Attaché at the New Zealand Consulate in town. They have also have one friend, Dave, and one fan, Mel. By portraying all New Zealanders on the show as incurable dorks they are easy to love immediately.

Why am I telling you all this now? Because Sunday is the season finale. And you should watch it (along with all the preceding shows.) You can thank me when you have all of their songs stuck in your head.

  1. I agree. Season 2 has been nothing short of amazing! And there’s even an episode directed by Michel Gondry! So yea…watch it.
